Captain George T. Conaway Jr responded to an electrical fire at 803 Lombard Street on July 22, 1978 as the supervisor of the crew on Ladder 1.  While directing his men on the fireground, he suffered chest pains and was transported by the rescue squad to the Delaware Division.  He was transferred to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, where he died on August 22, 1978. Conaway joined the Wilmington Fire Department in 1959, following in his father's footsteps, who retired as a lieutenant.  Conaway graduated from Wilmington High School and Delaware Technical and Community College with a degree in Fire Technology.  His survivors include his wife Carol and their two sons, Brian and Steve.
